A great TED talk. Or, why i am who i am
TED Talks - Gever Tulley on 5 dangerous things for kidsI TOTALLY agree with Gever on this. there is no way i'd be the person i am today and have the successes i've had in my career and life if it wasn't for my parents allowing me to tinker, discover and learn basic lessons about the world.
in brief:
play with firemy parents took me camping. My "Fire Master" father taught me everything he knows (like how to start an inferno in a downpour). Fire is one of mankind's most basic tools. why aren't we teaching our kids how to use and control it?
own a pocket knifeMy father has always said: a knife is a tool, not a weapon. i've owned a blade of some variety since before i can remember.
throw a spearduh - everyone knows throwing stuff is fun!
take apart appliancesor as my parents used to say "you'll loose a finger one day doing that!". still have all fingers. I can fix appliances.
Break the DMCAits a frustratingly ill-conceived and backwards thinking law that leaves us in the digital dark-ages with no rights over what media and content we buy. does this really need an explanation?
Drive a carok.. i didn't do this as a kid. but i can totally understand why it's a great idea for getting children comfortable and aware of large machines.
